Christian Wulffen: Gegenstände zum gedanklichen Gebrauch

Mit über 30 Arbeiten aus fünf Jahrzehnten bietet die Ausstellung erstmals einen Querschnitt durch das Gesamtwerk Christian Wulffens. Wie kaum ein anderer ist dieser Künstler mit den Reutlinger Wandel-Hallen und der Sammlung Konkrete Kunst verbunden, viele Jahrzehnte war er ein wichtiger Wegbegleiter des Sammlerpaars Manfred Wandel und Gabriele Kübler. Er studierte an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, lehrte in den 1990er Jahren an der damaligen Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Metzingen und von 2003 bis 2022 am Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio.

The works of German-American Christian Wulffen often consist of industrially manufactured materials such as wooden slats, chipboard and adhesive tape. Arranged in precise repetitions, they encourage comparison. The focus is always on relationships between object and environment, measure and number, individual parts and the whole. The works tempt us to see such relationships as intentional and therefore meaningful. However, how they actually came about and the system behind them remains a mystery. More important than the relationships seen is the speculation about their origin: the works reflect our search for connections, because the artist has always taken the viewer's imagination into account. We are encouraged to think of logical connections and to imagine the works or their elements in a different order. What hangs on the wall or lies on the floor are visual puzzle pieces to think along with, objects to use mentally.

With over 30 works from five decades, the exhibition offers a cross-section of Christian Wulffen's entire oeuvre for the first time. This artist is more closely associated with the Wandel Halls in Reutlingen and the Concrete Art Collection than almost any other; for many decades he was an important companion to the collector couple Manfred Wandel and Gabriele Kübler. He studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, taught at the former Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Metzingen in the 1990s and at the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio from 2003 to 2022.
